Wolfram Aichele grew up in a German artistic family whose private values sat uneasily with the racial politics and enforced conformity of the Third Reich. Drawing on family papers and interviews, Giles Milton follows his adolescence through schooling, compulsory organisations and military conscription. The family’s efforts to preserve an independent cultural life reveal the narrowing choices available even to Germans who did not share Nazi convictions.

Wolfram’s wartime service took him through the Eastern Front and later to Normandy, where he became a prisoner of war. The book places his personal survival beside the regime’s crimes without turning reluctance or suffering into exoneration. It examines how accommodation, fear, duty and occasional resistance operated inside an authoritarian society, and how one family later attempted to understand the compromises forced upon it by dictatorship and total war.
