1939–1945

After Poland’s defeat in 1939, clandestine organisations developed into an underground state linked to the government-in-exile. Its structures included armed resistance, intelligence, education, courts, welfare and secret communications, with the Home Army becoming its principal military force.

The dispersed organisation also connected occupied Poland with émigré centres and Allied intelligence.
