Poland, September 1939. With Warsaw collapsing under German attack, Captain Alexander de Milja is recruited into the newly forming Polish underground. His first mission is to help move the national gold reserve out of the country aboard a refugee train, an operation in which military discipline must be adapted to disguise, bribery and improvisation.

De Milja subsequently works through occupied Warsaw, Paris, the Ukrainian borderlands and the Channel coast, carrying intelligence and organising resistance while both Nazi and Soviet power reshape Eastern Europe. His missions chart the transformation of a defeated army into a clandestine state, showing how couriers, railway workers, émigrés and professional officers sustain a national struggle after conventional resistance has failed.
