Paris, 1938. Cristián Ferrar, a Spanish lawyer working for an international firm, assists the embattled Spanish Republic in purchasing weapons despite the restrictions and evasions of European non-intervention. The task requires financial intermediaries, forged end-user arrangements and transport routes capable of surviving diplomatic pressure and enemy surveillance.
Ferrar’s search carries him through Paris, New York, Istanbul and Eastern Europe while agents serving Franco and Nazi Germany attempt to stop the shipments. The novel treats contracts, banks, ports and railways as parts of the battlefield, showing how the Spanish Civil War depended on clandestine international systems as well as combat within Spain.
