Paris, 1938. Carlo Weisz reports for Reuters while helping to produce Liberazione, a clandestine newspaper written by Italian anti-fascists in exile. When the paper’s editor is murdered by Mussolini’s secret police, Weisz inherits a role that exposes both the publication and its network of couriers, printers and informants.
Assignments on the Spanish front and contact with British intelligence bring Weisz closer to the European conflict that the exiles have long predicted. He also attempts to maintain a connection with Christa, a member of the underground inside Germany. The novel follows journalism as a form of resistance and shows how information can threaten authoritarian regimes before armies cross borders.
