The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

During the Holocaust, nine-year-old Bruno moves with his family from Berlin to a house beside Auschwitz, where his father has become commandant. From the far side of the camp fence he befriends Shmuel, a Jewish boy of the same age imprisoned with his family. Bruno’s limited understanding turns uniforms, forced labour and mass persecution into fragments that he interprets through childhood language.

The friendship leads Bruno to enter the camp in an attempt to help Shmuel find his father, with catastrophic consequences. Boyne presents the story as a fable about prejudice, innocence and moral blindness, not as a realistic reconstruction of camp life. Its premise, the children’s freedom of movement and the portrayal of German ignorance are historically implausible, so the novel requires explicit critical framing when used alongside factual accounts of Auschwitz and the Holocaust.
