A History of Loneliness

Ireland, 1972. Odran Yates enters Clonliffe Seminary believing that the priesthood offers a life of learning, dignity and service. His vocation is shaped by his mother’s expectations, the authority of the Catholic Church and his friendship with the more troubled Tom Cardle. As Irish society changes, Odran moves from parish work to teaching at a prestigious Catholic school and tries to preserve his private understanding of what a priest should be.

Decades later, revelations of clerical sexual abuse force Odran to reconsider the institution he served and the silences he accepted. The novel examines not only criminal acts but also the habits of deference, self-protection and wilful incuriosity that allowed abuse to continue. Odran’s first-person account becomes an inquiry into complicity: how an apparently decent man can fail victims by choosing institutional loyalty and personal comfort over difficult knowledge.
