Irish Catholic Church Abuse Crisis

From the late twentieth century, testimony, criminal investigations, journalism and state inquiries revealed extensive sexual abuse by Catholic clergy and members of religious orders in Ireland. The crisis also exposed transfers of accused priests, failures to report offences, institutional secrecy and the social power that had discouraged victims and families from challenging church authority.

Public investigations and reports changed the relationship between the Church, the Irish state and wider society. The disclosures contributed to a rapid loss of clerical authority and forced debate about responsibility beyond individual offenders, including the roles of bishops, schools, seminaries and lay communities.
