Scythian and Sarmatian Steppe Cultures

Scythian and related steppe societies flourished across the grasslands north of the Black Sea and eastwards into Central Asia from the first millennium BCE. Their communities depended on horses, mobile pastoralism, trade and warfare, and they left rich burial mounds containing weapons, jewellery, textiles and animal-style art.

Archaeological excavations have identified a significant number of female burials furnished with bows, arrows, spears and riding equipment. These finds do not prove that every ancient story about Amazons was factual, but they show that armed women were part of some steppe societies and may have contributed to Greek traditions about warrior women beyond the settled world.
