In the 1210s the Sword Brothers have helped expand the crusader state in Livonia, but success creates a new problem: many German crusaders are ready to return home while Estonia remains unconquered. The Bishop of Riga turns to King Valdemar II of Denmark for military support, introducing a powerful Christian rival into a region already divided among crusaders and Baltic peoples.

Conrad Wolff is sent to Ungannia, where a local dispute escalates into a much larger war. As hostile forces threaten Livonia, he must assemble an improvised army and hold the line until reinforcements can arrive. The novel emphasises the unstable alliances of the Baltic crusades, where religious warfare, territorial ambition and competition between Christian powers repeatedly overlap.
