Monmouth Rebellion

The Monmouth Rebellion broke out in 1685 after James II came to the throne. James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, claimed the crown and landed in the West Country with supporters who opposed Catholic kingship. The rebellion ended in defeat at Sedgemoor.

It mattered because it showed the continuing fear of Catholic monarchy and the weakness of armed rebellion without elite support. The Bloody Assizes that followed left a memory of harsh royal justice. The crisis helped set the tone for James II’s short and troubled reign.

The rebellion appears in novels about the West Country, dissent and late Stuart politics, and it connects naturally with Restoration-era fiction by Andrew Taylor and broader Stuart fiction by Jean Plaidy. It suits stories about rebels, farmers, dissenters, judges, soldiers and families forced to hide defeated men.
