Harry Furness and Herbert Rippinghall grow up as friends just as political conflict is dividing England. When civil war begins, family loyalty sends Harry into the Royalist camp while Herbert supports Parliament. Their opposing allegiances repeatedly place them on different sides of campaigns in which friendship might easily be treated as treason.

Harry serves the king through fighting, secret missions and dangerous journeys, yet refuses to regard Herbert as an enemy simply because they wear different colours. The novel follows the conflict beyond the first campaigns into defeat, exile and the unsettled years before the Restoration, using the two friends to explore how personal loyalty can survive a political division that tears families and communities apart.
