Autumn 1643. Captain Innocent Stryker leaves the Royalist headquarters at Oxford with orders to recover a missing treasure needed to finance the king’s war. The trail leads towards the Scilly Isles, where isolation, difficult seas and divided local loyalties make a supposedly contained operation increasingly dangerous. A Parliamentarian agent has been sent ahead and knows enough of the plan to turn every landing place and contact into a possible trap.

Stryker’s pursuit carries his company through storms, enemy-held country and competing claims to the gold before it reaches the Royalist fortress of Basing House. The mission tests whether military discipline can survive the temptations created by unguarded wealth and whether Stryker can distinguish treachery from desperation.
