The campaigns of 1644 carry Major Innocent Stryker through the Royalist advance in northern England, including the fighting around Bolton and Liverpool and the attempt to relieve besieged York. Royalist, Parliamentarian, Scottish and regional armies converge as Prince Rupert races to preserve the king’s position in the north. Stryker must lead men already exhausted by marching and siege while investigating treachery within his own side.

On 2 July, five armies and roughly forty-six thousand soldiers meet at Marston Moor. Oliver Cromwell’s cavalry and Rupert’s Royalists confront one another in a battle that will alter the balance of the war. Stryker’s experience cannot control the confusion of darkness, gun smoke and collapsing formations, but it may expose the betrayal operating behind the lines.
