Princess Mary, elder daughter of the Duke of York, grows up in a royal family divided by religion. Although her father remains a Catholic, Mary and her sister Anne are raised as Protestants, making the princess’s private loyalties inseparable from the political struggle over the future of the Stuart monarchy.

Mary’s marriage to William of Orange carries her into the politics of the Dutch Republic and eventually places her in direct conflict with her father after he becomes James II. The novel follows the emotional and political pressures that culminate in the Glorious Revolution, when Mary must choose between filial devotion and the responsibilities attached to a crown offered in opposition to her father.
