Margaret “Meg” More grows up in the unusually learned household of her father, Thomas More, who insists that his daughters should receive an education comparable to that of his son. Family life at Chelsea forms the emotional centre of the novel as More’s legal and political career draws him closer to Henry VIII and eventually into the highest offices of the kingdom.

The same principles that make More an admired father and scholar become dangerous when Henry seeks to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and establish royal supremacy over the English Church. More cannot reconcile the king’s demands with his conscience, while Meg understands more clearly than most what his refusal will cost the family. The novel presents the famous political confrontation through domestic relationships, showing how a dispute over authority and religion enters the life of a household that would rather remain private.
