In 1470, Anne Neville is used by her father, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, to secure a new Lancastrian alliance. She is betrothed to Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales, even though her affections lie with his Yorkist rival Richard, Duke of Gloucester.

The arrangement places Anne directly inside the final struggles of the Wars of the Roses. When Edward is killed at Tewkesbury, the future Warwick designed for his daughter collapses almost at once, leaving Anne politically exposed and personally uncertain. The novel follows a young noblewoman whose marriages and loyalties are repeatedly determined by the ambitions of men competing for the English crown.
