Franco-Prussian War

19 July 1870–10 May 1871

War between France and a coalition led by Prussia began in July 1870. German armies surrounded and defeated major French forces, and Napoleon III surrendered after the Battle of Sedan.

The collapse of the Second Empire produced a French republic that continued the war. Paris was besieged, the German Empire was proclaimed at Versailles and the final settlement transferred Alsace and part of Lorraine to Germany.

This context supports fiction about the military campaigns, political collapse and civilian disruption that transformed France and Germany in 1870–71.
