Caroline Era

The Caroline Era began when Charles I inherited the throne in 1625. It included failed wars, disputes over taxation, religious controversy, the Personal Rule, conflict with Scotland and the slide into civil war. Court culture was refined and ceremonial, but political trust steadily eroded.

It mattered because the tensions of the early Stuart monarchy reached breaking point. Disputes over Parliament, finance, bishops, royal prerogative and religious reform became impossible to contain. The period ended with the king on trial and the monarchy abolished.

Caroline and Civil War settings appear in Giles Kristian’s Bleeding Land trilogy, Michael Arnold’s Stryker novels and Robert Harris’s Act of Oblivion through its aftermath. The era suits fiction about noble households, Parliamentarian conscience, royalist loyalty, soldiers, preachers and families divided before open war.
