Battle of Passchendaele
31 July–10 November 1917 CE
The Third Battle of Ypres began in July 1917 as British and Allied armies attacked German positions around the Ypres Salient. Repeated offensives continued through autumn, with drainage destroyed by shelling and rain turning much of the battlefield into deep mud.
The campaign included infantry, artillery, aircraft and early tanks, but difficult ground limited movement and complicated the evacuation of wounded men and damaged machines. Passchendaele village was eventually captured at great cost without producing the strategic breakthrough originally sought.
