1917 CE
The Russian Revolution of 1917 unfolded in two major stages: the February Revolution, which ended the Romanov monarchy, and the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks seized power. War exhaustion, food shortages, worker unrest, peasant demands and political radicalisation all contributed. The revolutions shattered imperial authority and opened the separate period of civil war that followed.
It mattered because it changed global politics and created the first lasting communist state. It also turned private life into political danger, as class, loyalty and survival suddenly had life-or-death consequences. Doctor Zhivago, Ken Follett’s Century trilogy and many Russian Revolution novels use this setting for families, officers, doctors, aristocrats, workers and revolutionaries.
