Shanghai, 1921. American journalist Michael Sheridan rescues an amnesiac Russian refugee who calls herself Anastasia and resembles the youngest daughter of Nicholas II. The possibility that she survived the Romanov execution attracts claimants, political enemies and people who hope to profit from recognition of a lost grand duchess.

Michael follows fragments of memory through Berlin, London, Bolshevik Russia and New York before the Wall Street crash. The novel uses the historical survival legend as its central mystery, asking whether recovering a royal identity would offer Anastasia freedom or merely place her under a new form of control.
