Russian Civil War
1917–1922 CE
The Russian Civil War followed the Bolshevik seizure of power and developed into a multi-sided conflict involving Red and White armies, regional nationalist movements, foreign intervention, peasant forces and competing political authorities. Fighting stretched across enormous distances and overlapped with famine, epidemic disease and state terror.
The conflict mattered because it determined the survival of Bolshevik rule and helped shape the institutions and violence of the early Soviet state. It also scattered refugees across Europe and Asia and drew British, American, Japanese and other foreign forces into intervention.
