In 1919, Martin Falconer is still a veteran pilot while barely out of his teens. Peace in Western Europe gives him little desire for a quiet life, and when he is offered the chance to fly in Russia during the Civil War he accepts almost immediately. The new campaign takes him from the familiar structures of the First World War into a conflict divided among Bolsheviks, White armies, foreign intervention forces and local factions.
Flying over the Russian landscape, Martin discovers that the political and moral boundaries are far less clear than those he imagined on the Western Front. Aircraft still provide speed and excitement, but intervention in another country’s civil war exposes him to a different kind of brutality. The novel follows his growing recognition that military adventure can serve causes he does not fully understand.
