Fleeing India after another sexual scandal, Flashman reaches the United States and is seized by people who know his earlier identities from the slave trade. Abolitionists associated with the Underground Railroad pressure him to enter John Brown’s organisation, while competing agents seek to use the proposed uprising for their own political ends.
Flashman travels with Brown’s followers towards Harpers Ferry, attempts to sabotage or escape the operation and becomes trapped when the federal armoury is seized. The raid’s defeat places him among Brown, hostages and United States Marines as a failed revolt becomes a national symbol. His cynicism provides a hostile but revealing view of faith, abolitionist commitment and the sectional crisis before the Civil War.
