Flashman is sent into the Punjab disguised as a legal agent while the Khalsa army dominates the unstable Lahore court. He becomes entangled with Maharani Jind Kaur, the child ruler Duleep Singh and ministers whose rival plans alternately encourage and restrain war with the East India Company. His assignment becomes a struggle to escape a court where every faction expects him to betray another.
When the First Anglo-Sikh War begins, Flashman reaches the British army and is caught in the desperate fighting at Ferozeshah. He later receives a mission involving Duleep Singh and the Koh-i-Noor diamond as the defeat of the Khalsa reshapes the Punjab. The novel treats the diamond not as treasure alone but as a symbol manipulated by soldiers, courtiers and imperial power.
