Flash for Freedom!

by George MacDonald Fraser Book 3 in the The Flashman Papers series.

First published 1971

4.3(6,645)

A rigged card game and political embarrassment place Flashman aboard the Balliol College, a slave ship commanded by the brutal classicist John Charity Spring. The voyage carries him from Liverpool to West Africa and across the Atlantic, where he participates in trafficking enslaved people before the United States Navy captures the vessel and he adopts another false identity to avoid prosecution.

In America, Flashman moves through Washington, New Orleans, a Mississippi plantation and the Underground Railroad. He becomes alternately a slave driver, prisoner and reluctant escort to the fugitive Cassy, meeting Abraham Lincoln while trying to escape both abolitionists and slaveholders. The novel uses his moral emptiness to depict the commercial, legal and physical violence sustaining Atlantic and American slavery.
