Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge

1785–1856

Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge was the governor-general of India during the First Anglo-Sikh War. A veteran soldier, he worked with commander-in-chief Hugh Gough through the difficult battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal and Sobraon before imposing a settlement on Lahore.

Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge also held the offices or ranks of member of the House of Lords, Member of the Privy Council of Ireland, Member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, and Master-General of the Ordnance. Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge was born in Wrotham and died in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
