Taiping Rebellion
1850–1864 CE
The Taiping Rebellion was a vast mid-nineteenth-century civil war led by a heterodox religious movement against the Qing Dynasty. It created a rival state, captured Nanjing and devastated large parts of southern and central China. The conflict caused enormous loss of life.
It mattered because it nearly brought down the Qing and reshaped Chinese military and regional power. The rebellion offers fiction a setting of apocalyptic belief, peasant mobilisation, siege, famine, family separation and imperial counterinsurgency. It is also useful for novels about missionaries, officials and ordinary people trapped between armies.
