Taiping Rebellion

The Taiping Rebellion was a vast mid-nineteenth-century civil war led by a heterodox religious movement against the Qing Dynasty. It created a rival state, captured Nanjing and devastated large parts of southern and central China. The conflict caused enormous loss of life.

It mattered because it nearly brought down the Qing and reshaped Chinese military and regional power.
