Battle
28 January 1846
The Battle of Aliwal was fought on 28 January 1846 between Sir Harry Smith's British and East India Company force and the Sikh army commanded by Ranjodh Singh Majithia. The Sikh position rested on villages near the Sutlej.
Smith concentrated his attack against the Sikh left and forced a general withdrawal towards the river. The defeat cost the Sikh army much of its artillery and removed an important threat to British communications.
Aliwal strengthened the British position before the final assault on the main Sikh bridgehead at Sobraon.
