Gulab Singh
1792–1857
Gulab Singh was a Dogra ruler who founded the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. He rose under Ranjit Singh, expanded Dogra power and acquired Kashmir from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar after the First Anglo-Sikh War.
Gulab Singh also held the offices or ranks of Maharaja, Raja, and vizier. Gulab Singh belonged to the Jamwal; Dogra dynasty. Gulab Singh was born in Jammu division and died in Jammu.
Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War reconstructs the crisis that followed the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and brought the Sikh Empire into war with the East India Company in December 1845.
