Ranjodh Singh Majithia

Ranjodh Singh Majithia was a Sikh commander associated with the First Anglo-Sikh War. He operated with forces that crossed the Sutlej and fought British troops, becoming part of the Khalsa army’s attempt to resist growing East India Company power.

Ranjodh Singh commanded Sikh forces during the campaign around Ludhiana and the Sutlej in 1845–1846 and was involved in the fighting that culminated in the British victory at Aliwal. The defeat helped break the Khalsa army’s offensive position before the final battle at Sobraon. His career belongs to the last major attempt by the Sikh state to resist East India Company expansion before the Treaty of Lahore.

Amarpal Singh’s The First Anglo-Sikh War examines Ranjodh Singh Majithia as a Khalsa commander during the campaign of 1845–46. His leadership is especially important at Aliwal, where Sikh forces faced Harry Smith’s British division, allowing the book to assess both the tactical performance of the Sikh army and the political instability behind the Lahore government’s conduct of the war.
