Battle
10 February 1846
The Battle of Sobraon was fought on 10 February 1846 at a fortified Sikh position beside the Sutlej. Gough's army subjected the entrenchments to artillery fire before infantry divisions attacked the defensive line.
The fighting became a close and destructive struggle inside the works. The Sikh retreat across the river caused further losses when the bridge and crossing routes failed under pressure.
Sobraon broke the principal Khalsa field army and opened the road to Lahore, bringing the active campaign of the First Anglo-Sikh War to an end.
