California Gold Rush
1848–1855 CE
The California Gold Rush began in 1848 after gold was found at Sutter’s Mill. Migrants arrived from across the United States, Latin America, China, Europe and Australia, creating boomtowns, violence, speculation and rapid settlement. California’s population and economy changed dramatically within a few years.
It mattered because it accelerated American expansion and intensified conflict over land, labour, race and law. Gold-rush settings are rich with ambition, fraud, loneliness, sudden wealth and sudden ruin. They work well for novels about miners, merchants, sex workers, migrants, Indigenous communities and families chasing impossible luck.
