Battle
18 December 1845
The Battle of Mudki was fought on 18 December 1845 between a Sikh force associated with Lal Singh and the advancing army of Hugh Gough and Henry Hardinge. Much of the action took place after nightfall in broken ground and scrub.
Confusion, close-range fighting and limited visibility produced heavy casualties. The East India Company army retained the field, but the battle demonstrated the effectiveness of the Khalsa infantry and artillery.
Mudki opened the main campaign and led almost immediately to the larger confrontation at Ferozeshah.
