Battle of Little Bighorn
1876 CE
The Battle of Little Bighorn was fought in 1876 between U.S. Army forces under George Armstrong Custer and Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors. Custer’s command was destroyed in a dramatic defeat. The battle became one of the most mythologised events of the American West.
Its significance depends on perspective: for the United States it became a symbol of military disaster, while for Indigenous nations it was a victory in defence of land and autonomy. The aftermath brought intensified U.S. military pressure. Fiction can use the battle to challenge legend, follow multiple viewpoints and examine how memory turns violence into myth.
