Austro-Prussian War

14 June–23 August 1866

The Austro-Prussian War arose from rivalry over leadership of the German states and disputes following the war against Denmark. Prussia and Italy fought Austria and its German allies in a short campaign in 1866.

Prussian victory at Königgrätz ended Austrian influence within a reorganised northern Germany. Austria subsequently reached the Compromise of 1867 with Hungary, while Italy gained Venetia.

This context supports fiction about the political and military upheavals encountered by travellers in central Europe during the 1860s.
