Paris Commune

The Paris Commune emerged after the siege of Paris and the collapse of Napoleon III’s Second Empire. Conflict between the national government and the armed National Guard led Parisian radicals, republicans and socialists to establish an elected communal government in March 1871.

The government at Versailles retook the capital during the Bloody Week in May. Street fighting, executions and mass arrests killed or displaced thousands. The Commune became a lasting symbol for socialist and revolutionary movements, while its suppression shaped the politics of the French Third Republic.

The Prague Cemetery uses the Commune as part of a world of espionage, provocation and manufactured political fear. Victor Hugo, Émile Zola and later historical novelists also explored the social divisions exposed by 1871. The setting suits fiction about barricades, informers, journalists, soldiers and civilians trapped between revolution and state retaliation.
