Paris and Italy, 1897. The forger Simone Simonini discovers that another personality appears to be writing in his diary and attempts to reconstruct the missing parts of his life. His memories place him among spies, revolutionaries, clerics and publishers who turn prejudice and invented documents into political weapons.

Simonini’s career intersects with Italian unification, the Paris Commune and the Dreyfus Affair, while his fabrications draw upon older anti-Jewish and anti-Masonic myths. The novel shows how borrowed stories can be assembled into apparently authoritative evidence and how a professional liar contributes to the document later known as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
