With Buller in Natal

At the outbreak of the Second Boer War, Chris King and a small group of young men from Johannesburg find themselves caught between the advancing Boer forces and the British army in Natal. Their knowledge of the country, horses and local conditions makes them useful as scouts and irregular fighters rather than conventional soldiers.

The story follows the opening campaign through battles and the siege of Ladysmith before the relief operations associated with General Redvers Buller. Chris’s group experiences the war through reconnaissance, dangerous journeys and sudden fighting, while the repeated reverses of the British forces show how quickly confidence in a short campaign gives way to a much harder struggle.
