The Last Horseman

Joseph Radcliffe, a Dublin lawyer and former cavalryman, is drawn from Ireland to South Africa when his son runs away to fight in the Boer War. With Benjamin Pierce, another veteran shaped by earlier conflicts, he enters a war where imperial confidence is being tested by commandos, artillery, distance and distrust.

The novel is set at the turn of the twentieth century, moving from late Victorian Ireland into the Second Boer War. It links Irish grievance, imperial service and South African resistance, making the search for a son part of a larger story about empire, loyalty and the violence Britain struggled to control.
