Thomas Blackstone is forced into Edward III’s invasion of France after a murder charge leaves him with little choice but the gallows or the war bow. What begins as punishment becomes the making of a soldier, as Blackstone learns the discipline, fear and opportunism of medieval warfare on the road to Crécy.
The novel is rooted in the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War, especially the 1346 Crécy campaign. It uses the English longbow, siege warfare and the shock of aristocratic French defeat to turn a village stonemason into a figure shaped by war, patronage and survival.
