The Black Death reaches England and overturns the society in which John Hawkwood has begun to make his reputation. Disease cuts across rank and profession, disrupting households, labour and military service while survivors confront a landscape in which familiar obligations can no longer be taken for granted.
After spending the winter in the north, Hawkwood and his companions return to soldiering. He begins shaping his own company into a disciplined fighting force and enters the service of Baron Mortimer on the Welsh border. The novel follows Hawkwood’s movement from individual warrior toward commander as plague and continuing war create both danger and opportunity for professional soldiers.
