Crécy
In 1335, young John Hawkwood leaves his home and goes to London, where survival requires him to abandon the limited future of an apprentice tailor and learn the practical skills of a soldier. Service first takes him north against the Scots and introduces him to the discipline, violence and hierarchy of campaigning.
Hawkwood’s military education then draws him into Edward III’s wars in France. The novel follows the early formation of the man who will become a famous mercenary captain, placing his personal rise against the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War and the campaign that will culminate in the English victory at Crécy in 1346.
