In the 1350s, the young Nigel Loring is determined to win the honour and reputation expected of his family. His search for worthy deeds carries him from local disputes into the military world of Edward III, where service, personal courage and public reputation are measured against the chivalric ideals he has absorbed.
The action follows Nigel through campaigns and trials that lead toward the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. Written as a prequel to The White Company, the novel shows the formation of the older knight later seen by Alleyne Edricson, while presenting the Hundred Years’ War through tournaments, raids, sieges and battlefield service.
