The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes presents eleven investigations that broaden both Holmes’s career and personal history. Silver Blaze concerns a missing racehorse and a murdered trainer; The Gloria Scott and The Musgrave Ritual reveal two of Holmes’s earliest cases; and The Greek Interpreter introduces his more powerful and secretive brother Mycroft. Other stories involve financial deception, an invalided soldier’s hidden past, medical exploitation and the theft of a naval treaty whose disappearance threatens a political crisis.

The Crooked Man returns to the Indian Rebellion of 1857, where a betrayal during a besieged garrison resurfaces decades later inside a British military marriage. The volume culminates in The Final Problem, which sets Holmes against Professor James Moriarty and follows their contest across Europe to the Reichenbach Falls. Watson presents the apparent deaths of detective and criminal mastermind as the end of his record, giving the collection the structure of both a casebook and a memorial.
