A mixed group of European travellers journeys up the Nile aboard the Korosko, expecting an organised excursion through Egypt. Their trip becomes a survival crisis when Dervish raiders seize the party and drive the captives into the desert, far beyond the security on which the tourists had relied.
Captivity exposes tensions of class, nationality, faith and temperament among the travellers while forcing them to depend upon one another. Set against the frontier created by the Mahdist conflict, the novel turns imperial tourism into an adventure about vulnerability, endurance and the sudden collapse of ordinary assumptions.
