In 1358, the mercenary Free Company known as the Via Crucis destroys the Norman village of Avranches, leaving behind a legacy of violence that has not been forgotten. More than twenty years later, Brother Athelstan is called into a series of killings in London, some carried out with the precision of assassination and others deliberately designed to humiliate their victims.
Several bodies carry the message "Justitia Fiat" — let there be justice. Athelstan must determine whether the murders are acts of political revenge and how they connect to the atrocities committed in Normandy. The inquiry draws him into old grievances whose survivors have had decades to remember names, trace responsibility and prepare an elaborate reckoning.
