The House of Shadows

by Paul Doherty Book 10 in the Brother Athelstan Mysteries series.

First published 2003

4.4(2,302)

Autumn 1380. Brother Athelstan and his Southwark parish are preparing for their Christmas mystery play when two young women are murdered at a local tavern. Their deaths begin a sequence of killings around St Erconwald’s, drawing Athelstan and Sir John Cranston into a case involving thieves, bounty hunters and the Knights of the Golden Falcon, a group of former soldiers gathering for a reunion.

The violence appears to reach back twenty years to the Great Robbery of the Lombard treasure in Southwark. As old participants and present-day suspects converge on the same tavern, Athelstan must reconstruct what happened to the stolen wealth and why someone is now prepared to kill over it. The investigation links the parish’s immediate fears to a crime whose consequences have remained hidden for a generation.
