London, February 1381. A killer known as the Ignifer, or Fire Bringer, is burning his victims alive and appears to be targeting people connected with the recent conviction of Lady Isolda Beaumont. Her husband’s death had led to her own execution, but the violence continuing after her death suggests that the case concealed more than a domestic murder.
Brother Athelstan and Sir John Cranston are ordered by John of Gaunt to investigate. Their search becomes more urgent when they learn that the dead Sir Walter Beaumont possessed the Book of Fires, a manuscript said to contain the formula for Greek fire.
